New Hampshire: NEP Wildcats vs. Maine: Portland Pirates

Fresh off a very long drive (thanks to some early winter snow) the Northeast Passage Wildcats took the ice versus the Portland Pirates who themselves were fresh off an intense game with the Pennsylvania Center-Pedes.  These two teams are very familiar with each other.  Many of Portland’s player got their start with, or at one time wore a New Hampshire uniform.

However, the teacher became the student right off the bat as New Hampshire was on their heals from the beginning.  New Hampshire played solid defense and were only trailing one to nothing after the end of one period.  However, as the game wore on the team speed of the Portland Pirates and their solid defense broke down New Hampshire’s well-spaced and positioned game plan.  A couple of goals for Maine including a beautiful, redirected goal by Brett Goodnow brought the score to three to nothing at the end of two periods.  Despite having few subs the Portland team kept up the pressure during the third period and managed to put another goal past Aguinaldo Luis who, despite making many circus saves, could not stop all the Maine scoring bids.

New Hampshire’s many rookies played very well especially Chris McGarry, and Eric Gissendanner.  Kevin Hosier led many offensive thrusts, but in the end the Portland Pirates were just more than the young Wildcats could handle.  Final Score: ME 4, NH 0  (Game photos courtesy of Karen Moore)
